I'm from a non medical background but i want to shadow a doctor. I don't really have any contacts and the trust seems reluctant to let me because of all the checks. I was wondering if anyone has any advice about how to go about shadowing a hospital doc?
Since you say trust, I'm assuming you're a UK student trying to shadow in a UK hospital.
The best way to shadow a doc is to literally pick one (preferably through some kind of contact - does your school know of any docs who have had students before?) and contact them. You'll still have to do all those checks though, but you would then have someone in your corner backing you up.
Most hospitals have a work experience co-ordinator as well - is it this person you've contacted? They're usually OK, though what you'll get to see varies hugely from place to place.
Better experience is to get a job as a porter/HCA/volunteer etc regularly for at least a year in some kind of healthcare setting. Looks much better on the PS, you learn more, and you get to really appreciate the less nice sides of med from early on! I'm assuming you've already lined something of this ilk up...
hi fiona! I was wondering if I would be allowed to shadow a doctor before november...I have some work experience lined up for november in coventry in the ophthalmology department, but ideally i'd like something sooner in a different department..thankyou😍[email protected]
Do you guys know of any exchange either for shadowing/ clinical exposure or research between hospitals of Canada and England? In other words, is it possible for a Cdn med student to shadow in England. Please let me know. Thank you very much 🙂
i wrote to the personnel department in the hospitals, explaining who i am, why i want the work experience, etc.
another good way is to volunteer within the hospital... a regular thing, but nice.
