Im about to start my second semester of my freshman year next week. On this Friday I will be shadowing an associate medical examiner who also happens to be an assistant Pathology professor at the medical school that I wish to go to 😀. My question is will medical schools frown upon me shadowing a medical examiner. Im thinking what medical school looks to produce a medical examiner? Don't they rather produce doctors that work in preventive care specialties so they can help living people. Also could this possibly work in my favor that I am shadowing a Forensic Pathologist that works at a large regional facility that requires 250+ autopsies per year. Thanks in Advance!

I don't think that it will be looked down at all. Shadowing a medical examiner will give you a great and unique opportunity. It will also give you something to talk about at your interviews.

yes i agree go for it. I wanted to do the same but the med exam office in my town didnt allow shadowing. it definitely will be a unique experience!

Over half of my clinical experience was in the forensic pathology department (with medical examiners). It was the topic of conversation at one of my interviews.

I don't think it will work against you as long as you accumulate some patient exposure and humanitarian efforts as well.

I got my masters in forensics and as part we had mandatory rotations in one of the MEs offices here in philly, and in one of the local area hospitals morgue. Youll love it...just get ready mentally for anything. Decomposed bodies, bodies hit by cars/busses/ you name it.

MEs are very good with anatomy too so it will be a great learning experience for you...and to echo the person above me, this will come up during interviews (did in almost all of mine) and they will think it is super cool and different from what most premeds do.

Observing an autopsy is a pretty interesting experience, if they let you. Just don't feel bad if you get a little shaky or have to step out (whatever you do, don't try to "tough it out").

Thank You All! and yes she said I will get to observe her perform a couple of autopies so I am super excited to have this rare opportunity as a freshman.
