I am going to be in my old hometown for the next couple of weeks and was thinking about calling up my old pediatrician and asking if I can shadow him. He runs his own small clinic.

Would it look good to get shadowing experience with a Pediatrician or should I look for a doctor tending to older patients?

Shadow whoever you want. It is the exposure/experience that counts. Of course, if peds is what you are genuinely interested in, then all the more reason to do this.

Bottom line, this experience won't hurt - if only, it will help, so why not?

For at least one of the types of doctor you follow, I think that shadowing any primary care physician is a good idea. Primary care=family practice, peds, OBGYN, psych, internal medicine. Before applying it would be nice if you follow 2-3 doctors total, for 1-5 days each, depending on your interest and their tolerance of your presence. The great thing about peds, is that they are less likely to refuse when asked if you can come in.
