I am a Massachusetts resident, and would really like to stay in the northeast if possible, so looking for my chances at Boston/NY/Conn/VT MD programs primarily. I am applying for the 25/26 cycle.
1. GPA/Education:
Physics major at an engineering school in the northeast, not prestigious, but solid and recognized within NE. I recently completed a postbacc through Harvard Extension School to fulfill my bio/chem prereqs. I will be getting a committee letter from this program. My only remaining course is Orgo II.
2. MCAT:
525 (132/132/131/130)
3. Demographics:
White male, MA resident (7 years, so meet in-state criteria for UMASS)
4. Clinical Experience:
65hrs volunteering at hospital chemo infusion center interacting directly with patients.
40+ hrs (ongoing, 4hr/wk) at a hospital at an info desk, attempting to transfer to a more hands-on role.
12hrs in the OR/procedure room: engineer, was present at several human studies, interacting with patients.
8hrs (ongoing, 8hr/mo) red cross blood drives.
5. Research/Work Experience:
My degree is in physics, and I have been working as an engineer (title recently changed to Scientist) for the past 5 years at hospitals and medical device companies. I worked full-time for 3 years as an engineer at a major Boston hospital developing novel medical devices. My work focused heavily on the mechanical portion of the devices, but over my time at the lab I was exposed to more of the medical science portion. I conducted LOTS of animal studies. I have 4 conference papers from this job, but no first author. I have 2 additional papers from an internship at a national lab, 2nd and 4th author. 1 pending patent. My current job is with a medical device company developing new technology as an R&D Scientist. I am fitting in all of my shadowing, volunteering, and classes around a full-time work schedule.
6. Shadowing:
My biggest weak point, currently working on it.
6hrs Otolaryngology in the OR
8hrs primary care
8hrs Oncology clinic (ongoing), hope to get 20-30 more hours with this doc this spring.
7. Non-Clinical Volunteering:
~500hrs food pantry in my hometown, middle school-college
~60hrs food pantries/food drives in Boston since graduation
55hrs (ongoing) American Red Cross Disaster Relief Worker. Intake worker (DAT) for local fires and flooding. Direct interaction with impacted individuals within hours of the event.
8. Extracurriculars:
- Teaching assistant throughout undergrad for physics courses
- President of fraternity, president of college outing club
- Competitive cyclist and triathlete
10. Honors:
-Graduated undergrad "With Highest Distinction" (institution does not have latin honors)
-Competed at international science fairs in high school
Schools:
Ideal Geographic Range:
- BU, Tufts, Harvard, UMASS, Columbia, NYU, Yale, UConn, UVM, NY Medical College
Others:
- University of Wisconsin, Pitt, UNC, Ohio State, Mayo, Indiana, Case Western,
Looking for any suggestions on additional schools, or things I can do in the next 6 months to bolster my app. Shadowing is my #1 priority this spring.
