Hey guys,
Im getting my feet wet with my first showding experience. My father is a nurse practioner and I'll be following him and the M.D. he works with. I would love advice/conventional wisdom/suitable questiosn to ask from anyone who has shadowed before. Net working ideas would be great as well.

Thanks,
Hume

These are basic social skills. Be positive and grateful for the opportunity and be yourself. Show interest in what they are doing and if they like answering your question ask them and if they don't then stop asking questions. You have to play it by ear.

Some doctors I've shadowed could care less I'm there and others love teaching and explaining, so it depends.

Genuine great attitude is essential though (I guess in everything not only shadowing).

Suitable questions, "what happened there? Why did you do that? what do you plan to do?" Etc on and on. "what do you like about this job?" "why did you chose this specialty?"

There is no right answer here, it is all style and dependent on who you shadow.

Hume,

Enjoy your experience! If you have more specific questions, we can advise you more accordingly. I have tons of shadowing experience, so, lemme know...

It'll depend on the situation, but personally I think shadowing is the place to ask the "why a doctor", "what do you like/hate" type questions. While I think medical questions like "what diagnosis" or "what treatment" questions are interesting, without the medical background they won't be very relevant to you.

Thanks for the advice guys,

The MD who my father (a NP) works with cleared me to observe a few surguries (1 knee and 2 hip replacements). Twas a grand experience. Though the doctor took time to bring me close and explain various aspects of the surgury, the guy is a machine and was on the moving hard the each day (2 days). Because I was under the wing of my dad I only got a bit of time with the doctor.

When applying to med school can I/should I mention this experiences? I have plans to shadow another doctor more closely and get LOR, but can I add this as small experience as well?

Thanks again,
Hume
