The receptionist woman called me up with a nice gig for shadowing, but I have to fax her over school insurance. (?) When I did a Field Study (for credits) @ a hospital recently, my major's department signed off on things like covering the student if anything happened, but since this is winter break and I'm not sure if a student is covered by the school without classes running. Does this mean I am SOL for shadowing?

Has anyone been in the same boat?

Your ortho guy, thinks you're a medical student...

So yes, if you were a medical student, you'd have insurance.

However, you're not... so... make sure you tell this doctor you're shadowing that you're not a med student... and you're a pre-med student.

When I sent in my cover letter and resume it said many times I was a pre-med with my undergraduate university, how I'm graduating in the spring, etc. I recalled again, but of course a different woman picked up and had barely a clue to what I was asking.

She did say however I need to go to the admissions office and get a "certificate of insurance" to fax over? I was told to re-call back later to speak with the original person. Ah this is so complicated.

Bump. Still really nervous about this. What kind of insurance does my undergrad school have on me to do things like this?

University insurance covers breaks.

They do NOT usually cover any MedMal or similar. They think you are a medical student. I would ask to speak to the MD.

What insurance is this for in general?

So I just called, and they still think I just go to my admissions office at my school to get this insurance thingy. But on a side-note, I was really nervous about trying to shadow docs cause I have 0 shadowing hours, and about 54 hours of volunteering. This docs office gave 8-5, with one of the bigger honchos, on four days on a week! And I received another offer from a D.O. for 4 hours on one day.

And the secret, (which isn't really a secret) was that for both of these places I sent faxes to with a resume/cover letter. Forget cold calling or e-mailing. Faxing is the way to go!
