Hey all,

Would it be useful to shadow an orthodontist? My orthodontist [yes I am a 21 year old with braces] invited me to shadow him - I would like to take him up on the offer but figured I would see if it is 'worth my time' (between studying for exams for classes, studying for the DAT again, and work, it will be hard to find time to shadow but if it will help me improve my chances of getting in next year I'll definitely find the time). Have any of you shadowed an orthodontist? So far I've shadowed two GP's.

Thanks 🙂

PS. "The power of positive thinking says I will still get an interview and get into dental school this year so I won't have to worry about any more shadowing anyway 😛"

Of course it is worth it. You should try to get exposure to as many specialties as you can...just don't spend too much time there, you only need a taste

Definitely. If the schools that you are applying to require a certain number of hours of observation, this won't count, but you can still enter it as part of your "dental experience" on the application. I shadowed a couple specialties: an oral surgeon, periodontist, and pediatric dentist in addition to my actual hours of observation.

What do you mean it wont count?

Don't let it convince you to stop studying! Shadowing an orthodontist would be a great idea. But if you feel it would compromise your studying or your grades, I would advise against it. It's probably not as important as +.1 on your GPA or +1 on your DAT.

guys this thread is more than a year old.
