Hi I have some questions and I hoping y'all can answer them for me. So I don't plan on applying to vet school until next year. I currently work at a vet clinic and will be able to get a letter of recommendation from him when the time comes, however this summer I want to shadow another vet to first get more hours and experience but to also have another vet to get a letter from. My question is if i shadow at this one vet during this summer ( I won't have time to shadow in the school year and work at my current vet because of my schedule) can I come back to him next may and ask him if he would be willing to write me a letter. Is that ok even with the big gap. Also how did y'all go about asking to shadow a vet?

I think the most important part of LORs is to get letters from people who know you and can speak about the person you are and the veterinarian you will be. The short answer is, yes, of course you can ask whoever you want. But the best thing to do is to make sure you keep up the relationship and not just disappear and then suddenly ask for a letter a year later.

I would second this. If you have a great summer there and think the letter of recommendation will be strong, then by all means ask for one. If I were you I would bring it up towards the end of the summer while you are still shadowing and ask if the vet will be willing to write a letter. Then when it comes time to apply, I would contact them again just giving them a heads up you will be asking for a letter and possibly giving some details of the things you did while shadowing so that vet has an easier time remembering everything you did while there.

I was in a similar situation and I asked the vet to write me a LOR at the end of the summer (rather than waiting until application time and writing me one months later).
