I'm going into a family doc with my gf today, never seen this doc before. It's a small and independent clinic and I want to shadow the doc she's going to see.

Should I ask the receptionist? Should I ask the doc himself when he comes to the exam room? Is it unprofessional to ask them yourself or do you think they'd like the initiative?

Thanks!

just ask your gf to introduce you to the doc, then ask him directly.

She hasn't seen the doc either before! We're fairly new to the area.

ask the doctor
but don't just be like hey can i shadow you
build rapport and then say that you're interested in medicine blah blah and then ask if it would be okay to shadow

Why are you tagging along on her appointment....? Also yes, I agree with yehhhboiii, build a rapport first.

Definitely ask the doc directly, usually they are nice, but I agree you should probably build some sort of rapport first.
