I live in the suburbs of Chicago, Midwestern DG is 10 minutes from me and UIC is about 30-40 minutes away. I was wondering if anyone knew if they allowed undergrads/prospective students to shadow their D3/D4 students. I looked on the websites and neither mentioned this, wanted to see if anyone knew before I contacted admissions.

I'm not sure if they would let you shadow/volunteer at their clinic, you would have to call. But if I were you, I would definitely try to shadow/volunteer at the Chicago dental society clinic at Wheaton Il, right by downers grove and Lombard. They allow volunteers to work over there and you will meet many Midwestern faculty over there.

Thank you so much, I'll check it out!

I've seen a few undergrads shadow our D3/D4s and honestly, i think it's dumb. Your goal is to become a dentist, not dental student for life.

I'm an undergrad at Creighton and they allow undergrads to shadow D3 and D4 students. I loved the experience because I was able to move around from student to student and see some different cases.

I would just call and find out! Good luck!

Why in the world would you want to shadow a dental student?

Its very accessible, gives a good view of what clinical life in dental school is like, and provides a great opportunity to learn more about the school from the students in between patients. Not to mention the experience was very similar to actually shadowing a procedure at an office!

That would be great if you planned on being a perpetual student. Shadowing as it relates to ds requirements/recommendation relates to "clinical life" in private/group practice.
Shadowing Req/Rec for DS Admission.

My point is that shadowing at a dental school is very worthwhile, however it is not a replacement for shadowing at an actual practice.

As I stated in my prior post, there are a couple of positives you get from this experience that you do not get at a normal practice.
