Hi,
I was searching the threads about shadowing opportunities and found this website:

http://www.osteopathic.org/YOM/mentor_search.htm

I was about to start filling out my info, but I thought I'd better ask the experts on this forum first.

The biggest question I have is: is this mentor program what I'm looking for? Based on the info, it seems geared toward people who are already in DO school or who have graduated from DO school. I only have an undergraduate degree.

Have any of you used this? And is this effective? By that, I mean .. do the DO's actually respond to inquiries from this site?

Thanks in advance.

it works for pre-meds too, but its really up to the D.O. (whom you emailing to)

Thanks for your help.

Do you think it's better to call or to go with this mentor program?

I have some serious doubts about calling, since most of the time I expect the secretary to answer and say something like "I'll let the doc know you called and he'll get back to you as soon as he can." And that's basically the polite way to say "Go away."

I did the program, had a mentor contact me within a week or so, and had a freaking awesome shadowing experience. I highly recommend it for anybody looking to shadow. I think it's easier than contacting DOs out of the blue.

I say try out the mentor program first. However, not all the D.O. you select will respond to you, i did it about a year ago and I got 2 out of 5 respones. Try calling them after you get no luck from the program. :luck:

Thanks for the advice. I just submitted my info. Hope this works b/c I really don't want to have to make phone calls that sound like I'm trying to sell something.

I just took a look at this mentor program as well but none of the mentors in California are in my city. Any suggestions for where else I can look? As already stated, I don't want to just randomly call around.

I sent it out to every DO within a 20 mile radius of me (which was a decent amount), and I got a single response. The response ended up being the guy who wrote my LOR so hey it worked, just send out a lot of them.
