ok, so after i decided to become a dentist midway thru college, i found an internship at a private office and started going in pretty regularly for 2.5 years (8ish hrs/wk) all the way until now. my dentist doesn't officially log my hours, but a conservative guess at how many hours i have spent in the office comes out to around 1000 hrs.
i always thought 1000 hrs was not much, since it's basically just 6 months of a full time job, but spread over 2.5 years. but after seeing how few else on this board has that much hours, i'm worried as to what dschools will ask me at the interviews. my question is, how much do you think they'd expect me to know? i got to do basic chairside assisting and observation, while also performing basic front and back-office tasks. i know the basic info for a lot of procedures and am familiar with most of the tools and how a dentist office operates, would this be enough?
although i've been there 1000 hrs, i didn't actually OBSERVE the entire time... a lot of it was spent chatting with my dentist about various things, going out to buy equipment, and helping him redesign his office/website. we have become more like friends rather than just mentor/mentee. i thought about only putting down the number of hours i ACTUALLY observed for (which would be probably around 500?), but put down the total number of hours IN office instead...
what do you guys think?
