I don't think there's any universal requirement for research and shadowing although many schools assume that any competitive applicants will spend some time shadowing at a dentist's office. But some schools specify the required number of hours for shadowing on their websites (e.g. Ohio State, 20 hours at a general dentist's office). I heard research experience is not mandatory, but it can only help your chance of getting in.
