Shadowing hours

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
How do you keep track of your shadowing hours? And which section of the application do you include it in?

THanks in advanced!

You write them down and log them yourself. Then, when you have sufficient hours, the section on the AADSAS application for Dentistry Experience will have a place for you to name the supervisor (dentist), # of hours, description of activities, start and end dates, and whether it was shadowing or a paid experience. I think there are a maximum of 5 entries for the section.

There are also sections for Academic Enrichment Programs, Awards/Honors/Scholarships, Extracurricular/Volunteer/Community service, and Work Experience. For each of these you will also have to enter in a start and end date, as well as the ave # of hours per week and total # hours in the experience. Some have a limit of 5 entries; some have a limit of 10, though I forget which ones.

Oh, my bad. I assumed you were predental. sorry.

So, it would be better to get a lot of hours of shadowing from a few dentists, rather than getting a few hours from many dentists right?
Do the dentists get contacted? How does AADSAS know that the hours are correct?

Also, do we need any letters of rec or anything like that from the dentists we shadow?

Thanks!! 🙂

AADSAS doesn't know if they're correct. They believe you. And I'm not sure if all schools require a LOR from a dentist (think they do), but either way, it's a great thing to have.

Don't know if it matters that you have less from more dentists or more from fewer dentists. I would guess that if anything, more dentists might even be better because you would see different things. And that's the whole point of all this, to experience as much as you can about the field.

I just switched to pre-dent, and I'll start shadowing a dentist soon.

Is it okay if I shadowed a dentist once a month, for 5-6 hours and do that for a little over a year? I can get at least 60 hours that way. Or is it too spread out?

This is just speculation on my part, but I think the total hours matters most, not so much how spread out they were. I was asked on one interview the duration of my shadowing at a clinic, but the others didn't question it.
