If a school has a certain number of required shadowing hours must one have all of these hours complete when the application is sent in or just by the time of matriculation?

By the time you finish all your shadowing requirements you may be changing your mind on a career in dentistry.

some schools require you have a minimum of 100 hours. It's pretty easy to do over time and as you shadow different dentists.

Yes, quite easy over time. But I am applying this cycle and don't have near that many hours. I'm stretched thin taking courses this summer, studying for the DAT, working, etc.

I'm wondering if I should submit my app on June 3rd with as many hours as I can get by then (probably 50) and then supplement my app to the schools that require 100 as I complete them or do I have to wait to send in my app until I complete all 100?

thanks!

As far as I know, only UIC and NYU have the 100 hour requirement (or recommendation, I forget) so it may not concern you at all.

University of OK also requires 100. Midwestern Univ. recommends 100...

I would go ahead and apply with the hours that you have. Put "ongoing" on your app so the adcoms know you're still shadowing and still involved.

what toothache was saying is that you should complete your 100 hours reqs BEFORE applying that way you are 100% sure you want dentistry. It makes no sense to the adcoms to have you apply to their dental school without completing the minimum shadowing requirement as you MIGHT change your mind after you've submitted your application

Yeah, I understand that. So should I send in my app on June 3 with 50hrs and put my shadowing is ongoing, wait until I complete 100hrs (which might take awhile as I start summer courses on June 4th and will be in class from 9-4:30) and then apply or ????

Thanks for the input!

Apply with whatever you have and put ongoing. Don't hold your application back because of some hours. I have a hard time believing they would not consider your application if you are a top student just because you are 20 hours of shadowing short.

Anyway there is an excel sheet that shows the shadowing hours schools want. Like up above someone said UIC wants 100. It says 100 recommended, not required. I am sure most schools have a recommended amount, but it is not required. Anything close to it will do.

Hey, is the 100 hours all have to be with a general dentist? can some be with other specialties? Basically, does shadowing with all fields of dentistry count toward the hours?? Thanks

For most schools it is probably best to have a good many of the hours with general dentist. However, some schools are different. West Virginia for instance requires 50hrs and they want the hours to be "varied".
