Hi,

I am a recent graduate of a Canadian University and I was given permission to shadowing a doctor in the U.S. for 1-2 days. I am wondering if there are any documents that I might need to get in order to enter the U.S. with a reason of shadowing a doctor. Also, there aren't any laws that might restrict Canadians from shadowing doctors in the U.S. right?

Thanks for your help!

I can't think of any documents I needed that may be affected by your citizenship. Expect to fill out some generic HIPAA and privacy notices and stuff. You may need some immunization paperwork. A TB test may be expected.

Thank you very much for your reply! This was very helpful!

I am a Canadian as well and recently shadowed. Crossed the border via greyhound and all I needed was passport and proof that you are shadowing and not working (print the emails you have).

Hi @pizza1994 Thanks for your help! Really appreciated it!

If you're Canadian and only coming for a few days, the only government requirement will be your passport. They'd care if you were working but not shadowing.

The hospital may have additional requirements not specific to Canadians-- things like HIPPA (privacy) training, vaccination records, a negative TB test, etc.

As a matter of professional integrity, you should ask the MD who you are planning to shadow if s(he) has any special policies (including insurance issues or HIPAA protocol) before you actually shadow the MD. Ditto for any medical center or hospital (you might enter when you are passively shadowing the MD) since you aren't already legally affiliated with the medical center/hospital in some professional capacity.

Thank you.
