Has anyone done this? This is what I'm really interested in, but I'm thinking they might be fussy about extra people in NICUs.

I'm going to a NICU/breastfeeding conference next week, and I'm hoping that one of the neonatologists from the hospital at which I volunteer will be there. If so, I'll intro myself, etc., but wanted to see if anyone had done this kind of shadowing.

thanks.

I don't know w/r to shadowing, but I can tell you that at the children's hospital where I used to volunteer, they allowed volunteers in the NICU. Their main caveat was that for that particular shift you could only volunteer in the NICU -- i.e., you couldn't spend a few hours volunteering in the pediatric and adolescent inpatient units and then spend your last few hours in the NICU too -- so as to reduce likelihood of infection.

I shadowed a neo doc at a level III unit. I only did it when she was on call (my choice) and mainly weekends due to my schedule. A very interesting experience. Try contacting some of the docs in your area or if you have any networking contacts use them!!!

:luck:
