I've shadowed before, but both doctors were in Hawai'i where etiquette and dress code are a little different than in the contiguous 48. Next week will be the first time I shadow a doctor not in Hawai'i.

I have a few questions and hopefully you all can help.

1. I'm planning on wearing a shirt and tie. Is that enough or should I bring a sports coat too?
2. The doctor I'm shadowing is a DO Dermatology/Mohs surgeon so I'll primarily be observing surgeries and not traditional office visits. Is it ok to ask questions as the doctor is performing the procedure?
3. I might only be able to shadow for 2-3 days (I also had a brief meeting with the doctor so she could get to know me and decide if it was ok for me to shadow). Would it still be appropriate for me to ask her for an LOR?

1. Its up to you if you want the sport coat, but the shirt and tie should suffice
2. I wouldn't start asking questions during a procedure unless you are both comfortable with each other, if thats the case they will start pointing stuff out to you anyways.
3. Yes go for it.

1. I wouldn't wear a sports coat. Not necessary. Shirt and tie is fine for office shadowing. But honestly, if you are doing mostly surgery shadowing then you will probably have to wear scrubs. You should clear this up with the doctor before you shadow in the OR,

2. I agree with the post above me, don't start asking questions during surgery unless the doctor is comfortable with conversation during procedures. Surgery takes a lot of concentration.

3. Yes, go for it.

1. If you're going to be watching surgeries, they will have you change into scrubs anyway so a shirt and tie should suffice.
2. Also agree with above posts, I wouldn't just start asking questions. Once they start pointing stuff out to you that will open the door for questions.
3. I probably would go ahead and ask for one. The worst they can say is "no" right?

Well I'm only going to be shadowing for 2-3 days. I was planning on asking about it before I left on the last day.
