I'm about to begin working in the dental clinic at the veterans affairs hospital. Would this be considered shadowing or just work and what would adcom thing about me being paid to work instead of just volunteering. BTW I also shadow under a general dentist on the UAB faculty. Thanks

What would be you role at your new job at the veterans hospital?

Would you be working with dentists? Managing the front desk?

By the way, I've heard the adcoms favor paid positions over volunteer opportunities.

Dental experience is dental experience whether you get paid or not.

Volunteering is volunteering whether it's in dentistry or not.

So if you're worried that you're not volunteering enough do something different (think outside the box). Habitat for humanity? Soup kitchen? Adcoms like to hear that you're serving your community not just checking off a box on the dental school app.

unfortunately most of my time will be spent working the front desk, but I will often have the opportunity to aid chair-side as well as ask questions after hours.

Then I think you can successfully list this occupation under both paid, AND shadowing experience.
