Hi- I just applied to Isabella volunteer on 191st and Amsterdam. They have OT so I'm gonna do that until September then try to see if I can shadow in a school. I know Isabella needs more volunteer so you could check that out.

I volunteered at Bellevue Hospital Center.
I don't think you should ask up front for LOR. Most places know you would need it. It's part of the deal, lol.

i am perplexed about the downstate U. application procedure and not sure how should i do it better in order to better my chances of getting in. is doing shadowing in the Fall 2012 too late if i wanna for the Fall 2013 semester? i know their application open in June and i really want to get into the Fall 2013 program ( without losing one year)

Hey oojas, I'm in the same boat. I am starting my shadowing/volunteer next week ab 4hrs a week so by June I'll only have like 45hrs but am planning to apply and tell them I'm still shadowing and plan on shadowing at a school. So they know I'm doing something. Honestly at this point there is little you can change just make sure you start volunteer/shadow soon.

Someone I volunteered w/ last fall submitted her app while she was shadowing, and was invited for an interview. At that time she had done about 85 hrs. Also, she was missing A&P 2, which she is taking now.

i wonder if i can use my experience at work as additional experience in OT field.

I work with individuals with developmental and physical disabilities and teach them how to perform at their new work sites, i show them skills at how to become independent and maintain employment

i have been doing this for almost 3 years, full time.... what you guys think would this help in any way?

The work you're doing is amazing!!
From what I understand, they may prefer that you shadow an OT as a volunteer and not in a paid working position (if that makes sense). You can perhaps get a LOR from your supervisor and use that experience in your essay.

I found a list of nursing homes that have OT services 7 days a week, the only problem is reaching them. Is nursing homes good for shadowing experience? has any one had experience in this area?

BTW. i called like 7 places and they all seem leery about volunteers, not sure if its because of my accent or their lack of interest

Nursing homes are good, but I would also shadow at another location for additional experience in a different setting.
You can check out the link I post w/ locations in the city. That's what I used.

i called most of the numbers on this list before, most do not have the weekend OT services
