Just wanna plug shadowing... I was very fortunate to have gotten an appointment to shadow a leading geriatric care specialist (just today in fact) and got a great deal out of it. We got along great and he seemed genuinely interested in having me back to talk more and see more of the hospital.

For someone like myself with few contacts in the medical world and no medical-field experience otherwise (but hey, lots of experience in IT...), I think contacts with senior medical professionals are not only likely to be really important for such things as med school recommendations but also just plain in terms of learning about the field. I mean, just because I am only on my 2nd semester of Freshman classes doesn't mean it's too early to actually start learning something having to do with medicine! 😉

One more thing... geriatric care is way under-staffed. I am seriously concerned for the well-being of our older people as more and more head into needing greater amts. of health care and medication. The whole Schedule D fiasco is just a wee taste of what we are in for unless something really comprehensive is devised to handle the huge demand for healthcare that exists not just now but that will exist in a much greater way in only 10 years.

I haven't even gotten onto med school-- hell, am not even close to ready for the MCATs, even... but I already know what my speciality's gonna be!

congrats on a good shadowing experience. i got to shadow a local plastic surgeon and it was great to open my eyes to what plastic surgery really is as opposed to Dr. 90210.
