Does shadowing have to (or should it) be on the application when you submit it? I work full time in a campus research lab, and the receptionist at the health center here said that they don't do shadowing, so now I'm stuck. I was hoping to shadow the dentist from 8-10 then work in my lab from 10-6 but since I'd have to go off campus now, that kinda screws things up. So I'm wondering if it's something I can do in the summer AFTER turning my application in, or do I just need to try to figure something out now?

Do you have any dental experience? If not, I would work something out now. Also, if you can I would try to get in touch with a dentist at the health center. A receptionist is not the final word on whether or not you can shadow.

I dont have any personal experience. My dad's a dentist so I kinda lived in his practice in the summer as a kid, but never as an adult. I'm assuming the receptionist asked the dentist because she put me on hold before coming back and giving me the answer. I'll just have to figure something out I guess..

Since your dad's a dentist you could say you shadowed him over summers. Also unless the offices are wicked far away you could make it to campus in 30 minutes so you work 10:30-6:30. Really not that much time difference. I'm doing that now. Shadow in the am, class and work later on. I worked out my schedule this semester to shadow, research and go to class while working full time.

i agree with the others.......you should try to do a bit of shadowing. you dont need to shadow that much. probably like 50 hours total? try shadowing different general dentists and specialists.

i worked as an assistant for my dad. i didnt really shadow him.....i just started working.
