Which would be the best to do during my sophomore summer? I am already doing research during the school year and I have a family friend back home willing to let me shadow him, but would it be worth not doing research to shadow the whole summer? If I do shadow, I would also be volunteering as an EMT as well.

Do both? See if you can find doctors to shadow near your school.

Definitely do both.

Being premed is doing everything that you could possibly do to improve your application within a short amount of time and then realizing that pretty much everyone has done the same things as you have. (ps. Yes, that's a long winded sentence to exemplify the stress premeds share.)

If you have to choose one, consider this:

Shadowing is expected. So is service.

Research is a very nice plus.

??? How much shadowing do you plan to do? You really only need to go one morning or afternoon per week for the summer. 50 hours is all you need (both to satisfy admissions and to learn what you need to learn).

Just do research during the summer and see if you can go once a week for a few hours for shadowing.

Both is definitely doable. I had no shame in cold-calling physicians near my institution so I could do everything at the same time. Sure, some might not be available to do it, but there are a good number who are!

Do both. I was initially pretty worried about finding doctors to shadow near my school, but if you put yourself out there you'll realize how receptive most physicians are to having student come in that are interested. Particularly someone that is already as interested in radiology as you are.

Another vote for doing both/all three things.
