Shadowing

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Okay I'm seriously striking out everywhere I reach out to. How long did it take all of you before you had some luck? I thought I was getting somewhere with Jefferson but I guess I was wrong, there are a ton of hoops to jump through before you can shadow.

I just need some advice or even some encouragement. I feel like I'm running out of time and I don't have much physician shadowing to put on my application when I apply for the 2014-2015 cycle (perhaps a bit dramatic? Maybe. )

Thanks

I'm no expert, but if you're in a hurry I'd recommend trying to shadow in a clinic as opposed to a hospital. My understanding is there is less red tape. You've probably run through this already, but have you reached out to your friends for any contacts? Like somebody's dad/uncle/3rd cousin twice removed/etc. I got in touch with one doctor I shadowed through a friend whose father was treated by him.

Also, this is just my N=1 but older physicians seemed more willing to take me on than younger ones. But your mileage may vary.

I went around 1-out-of-12. Just gotta keep trying. Agree with trying at clinics; my only success was a Family Medicine doc running his own clinic out by where I live.

I asked a friend who's father is an oncologist but naturally she seems to have forgotten to ask. (Not the greatest friend)

I guess I'm going to have to look around for small clinics not run by any major hospital. There's a lot of that in the Philadelphia area though, everyone is sponsored by someone.

But thank you, I'll look around

Don't rely on your friend to ask. Just tell her to give you her dad's contact info.
