From what I know of anesthesiology, I think it would really be a good fit for me. I am only a first year but would like to take advantage of some of my time off over Christmas break and see if I can shadow an anesthesiologist. This might sound really stupid but do hospitals commonly allow this? At this stage of my education would this be an experience that would be worth trying to set up...or should I just be patient and wait until I'm into my rotating years? Thanks!

I've started shadowing an anesthesiologist as a pre-med, so I can't imagine why they wouldn't let you do it as a med student!

I suppose it's never too early to start thinking about a choice of career. You might impress someone with your eagerness to be exposed to the field, but you surely won't impress anyone with your fund of knowledge (but they wouldn't expect much, hopefully). You'll have plenty of time to do gas in the third and fourth years. I would focus on the basic sciences while your in them...the clinical sciences will come.

Plus, christmas break? Take your time off while you get it!

In any event, I'm confident that gas attendings would be glad to have you, since they're usually pretty mellow and happy folks.

I think it would be a great idea to spend a day or two in the OR. Most attendings love having students around. It's never too early to find out if gas is right for you.
