I have a question, I have tons of experience in shadowing medical doctors because that was my initial route. But I have chosen a higer way and decided to do dentistry. My problem is I'm applying this may and have few hours of official shadowing. The reason I say "official" is because my father is a dentist and I spent my life growing up around a dental lifestyle. So my question is will this hurt me? Or should I get some hours before applying? Also as a note, I'm moving to Louisville to apply to my fathers Alma Mater. What do you suggest?

Growing up in a family with a dentist is good, and will give you insight some of us don't have. However, I think you would be wise to get some shadowing in before you apply. Serioulsy you could get 40 hours in one week if you really wanted to. Making your application competitive in every aspect is important. Don't relax on this one just because you don't want to take the time to do it now. The other fact you need to think about is your change from Med to Dent. Why the change? Just because your Dad is a dentist doesn't mean you can neglect an important part of figuring out what you want to do with your life. Shadowing someone besides your dad will give you some more insight, making you that much more competitive.
