So tomorrow I'm shadowing an physician and am really excited. I have some general questions about shadowing.

1) How many hours are recommended?
2) I'm shadowing an Internist with a DO. I would like to apply to allopathic schools. Is it acceptable to shadow a DO?

Thanks!

1) How many hours are recommended?
There is no actual requirement to shadow a doctor for admission to an allopathic school. Thus, there is no recommendation. Accumulate as few or as many hours as you please.

I don't believe it makes a difference. A doctor, is a doctor, is a doctor. In practice, DO general internists who work in hospitals do basically the same thing as MD general internists who work in the same hospital. Both are physicians, and the job responsibilities are the same. The DO will likely know some musculoskeletal manipulation techniques that the MD wouldn't know, and may use it in conjunction with other treatment.

Can I ask how you lined this up?

A lot of people are wondering how to get a hold of a doctor and get them to let you shadow them.

Just got back from shadowing! What a great experience.

First off, I know there is no requirement. That's why I asked how many hours are recommended. For example, I'm sure that after 100 hours of shadowing, there will be very little exposure to new situations. I was asking how many are recommended without overkill.

I pretty much got the opportunity through a family friend.
