How much time should one shadow a given dentist? Considering that dentists generally engage in the same type of work everyday, is it really necessary to shadow for more than one or two afternoons (6-10 hours total)?

I could be mistaken; maybe dental schools are just looking at the total amount of hours spent shadowing. Any feedback on this matter would be greatly appreciated- Thanks much~

lol, you think you could observe everything a dentist does in six to 10 hours?

most schools dont have a set limit but generally the more hours the better.

You are probably a fast learner, but you may benefit by reading the other posts with the same topic.

I shadowed my family dentist for about 40 hours, and a husband-wife practice for about 60 hours. For the former, I went 4 days a week for 2 weeks. And the latter, I went once a week for most of the summer. I think most people will say that the more hours you have the better. See the same things over and over helps you understand what they are actually doing... and sometimes, the longer you shadow with a particular dentist, they might let you assist.
