My advisor talked to a local dentist and he is interested in my husband and I shadowing him. My problem is... what do I wear? I searched the net and I only found one place that said "professional attire". I have been losing weight recently and I only really have one pair of blue jeans until the next size down. I tried on my "nice pants" for the next size down and they are still sorta tight. Do I buy another $60 pair of black pants? Do I wear the tight ones? Can I wear blue jeans and a shirt and not look like a bum?

I know it doesn't seem like an important question among the interview/application issues, but it's really bugging me.

Nice clothing, look professional and treat it seriously so they will treat your shadowing experience seriously

I asked the dentist I shadowed and he wanted me to wear scrubs so that I looked like one of the staff. Call and ask.

Just ask the dentist what he/she would like you to wear. Some may say you can just wear scrubs or others may want you to dress professionally. I personally wore a nice shirt and khaki pants.

because you might want them to write you a letter of rec. in the future.......and when they sit down and begin to write, they will try to visually remember your visits......and it starts with your appearance...

Ask the dentist like everyone else said, I've been asked to wear scrubs and dress clothing. I wouldn't skimp on nice clothing if you are asked because hey you'll need them anyway in the future it's a good investment.

Thank you so much for your replies. I will call them tomorrow A.M. and ask. 🙂 (I felt weird about asking before, but I guess I'm not the only one who isn't sure what to wear.)

I wear a nice pollo shirt, dress pants and shoes. When I get there I just wear one of the extra lab coats he has. I'd definitely ask because I know my dentist very well so he had no problems letting me borrow a lab coat.

ok so i have been in this situation before (not knowing what to wear) you really have to call!!! because in my parent's office, its totally laid back and you wear what you want as long as you look like you are clean cut during the day and you wear a lab coat... we have had several people come and shadow and anything from scrubs to cute jeans a polo, comfy shoes with a lab coat...

so when i went to shadow (i have shadowed at 9 different offices) it was craziness... some said specific scrubs (ie. surgury), the perio office wanted everyone to wear like business attire with lab coats, cosmetic dental office everyone wore black (like a bar or a spa), the pedo office you wore "cute" scrubs (which they provided when i came)... so i guess you get my point, just ask bc you may not need to buy anything, bc they could provide it for you, you may want a suit, you may just wear jeans, it really matters on the dentist and their personality and honestly the day... sat is def more relaxed than the morning of a wed because if you are there at 6 am then, you know the whole business crowd is there and expects something totally different

hope this helped... gl:luck:

oh and it wouldnt hurt to invest in some cute suits because of all those interviews you will be getting😉

oh and its better to be overdressed than under dressed.... we all know that!!!

Oh no... cute suits... 😱 I'm so country. I haven't worn anything other than jeans and occasional cords since I was old enough to dress myself. I don't even know where to start. This should be interesting.

In situations like this it is always better to over dress than under dress. I would suggest wearing clothes that you would when going to a job interview.
