Hello everyone 🙂
I had a question about the number of hours of job shadowing that are required by dental schools...what is the minimum? I have about 24hrs of shadowing ( from general, pediatric, oral maxiofacial surgen). Is that enough? I am also volunteering at the emergency in the hospital and Im also volunteering at a hospice...what do you guys think? Thanks for all of your time and patience everyone 🙂

I think 40-50 would be better.

I think the magic number is 50, for some reason. I'd chat up the docs that you already shadowed and see if they have any dentist friends that would be willing to help.

Thanks sooo much you guys!!! I will do that! also about internships...should I just like walk up and ask???

How much more 'favorable' does one look when one shadows, say, more than 300 hours over the course of about 2-3 years? Is that a little overkill?

I would say yes that is overkill. After a certain amount, whatever that number may be to each school, additional hours are relatively pointless. It becomes obvious that you have seen what dentistry is like and know that is what you want to do.

I've really only shadowed maybe 8 hours and have seen various procedures and enough of the daily routine to know what it is like. I've seen busy days and slower days. I will continue to shadow but I think it is becoming more and more irrelevant in terms of admission to dental school. Personally I love it!
