Hi!

I am planning to apply for Fall 2010 School of Optometry.
Since my GPA is low, I am planning to take some pre-req courses during Fall 2009 semester at college as a non-meticulated student( I already graduated).
Also, I am planning to do shadowing starting this month.

But Is it too late to do shadowing starting this month, considering that OptomCAS is already opened and I need to get recommandation from optometrists?

Also, How can I ask optometrists for shadowing?

you're not too late, the application season just started. You could ask for a letter after shadowing 40 hours and still apply in september or october (I started shadowing in October, got a letter in Dec, and still got interviews at all the schools I applied using his letter).

Visit career centers and ask if they have any contacts with optometrists or just phone your local optometrists and ask them if you can intern there.

You've got to try though.

I'd suggest not making them decide right on the spot, telling them that they can think about it, and if they are interested can call you back at (***) ***-****.

I am planning to shadow as well but haven't started calling my local optometrists yet. I hope to start on it soon. Good luck with your shadowing!

How much shadowing is required or necessary?

I believe it depends on two things - 1. How long it takes you to know the field, the work of an optometrist and to build a relationship to get their recommendation. 2. Optometry schools want to see you have experience with private, commercial and hospital environemnts. I will start soon, I believe about 2-3 months is good.

How many doctors should I contact to get Doctor Shadowing? I heard that people usually contact more than 20-30 docotrs to get 2 of them answered.....
