I am very upset with UNLV. I just received an e-mail stating that because they have not heard from me in awhile and my credentials are incomplete, they have withdrawn me from the application process....and since the class is full, reapply for 2007.

1)The only correspondence that UNLV has ever made with me was to send in a cashier's check for $50 and a 2x2 picture-both of which I did in Feb.

2)I hold a B.S. degree and have fulfilled all the requirements

What upsets me is that the letter was stated in such a way that I have not completed my end. The cashier's check was taken and no correspondence was ever made with me after that. If I was denied because of my gpa or my dat, I will accept that. BUT, DO NOT write to me and make it seem like I did not make efforts to send in all the things required!!!!!!!!

Has this happened to anyone else??????????

Last year. I was unaware that they require one more letter than most schools.

What letter are you referring to?

In cases where an applicant is missing a requirement, shouldn't they at least tell you that something is missing, rather than just take your money and then say that you failed to complete your file?

did you call them to make sure your file was complete? Following up with them to make sure they received everything probably would have helped.

i had a similar situation with umdnj. i applied in july, sent them their secondary fee in the beginning of october, and never heard from them. in that time, i heard from each of the 4 other schools that i applied at and got interviews at all. i got accepted to the 3 schools where i attended an interview, and i emailed nj a couple times since. even though they were my last choice and i didnt want to go there, it annoyed me that they took my money and never sent me anything. i called 2 weeks ago and the lady didnt understand why i havent heard, saying my app was still under review. then a couple days later i got a rejection letter. i feel like they lost my application or something up until i called. i know i shouldnt be angry bc i did get into my top choice, but its annoying that they ignored me. i mean, what if nj was my top choice?

I got the same email but I didn't turn in anything (secondary or photo) and actually unofficially withdrew in Nov. Maybe they didn't get a part of something you had to send in.

Maybe you should have called to see if your app was complete.

You should have been more persistent in checking on your application. UNLV was one of the few schools that would answer the phone when I called. I even got ahold of Dr. Ancajas. They checked on my application for me several times this year.
But, I feel your frustration about the letter. I sucks to get rejected.

they posted on AADSAS that i was missing a document without emailing me personally earlier in the year. When I called them they told me they did not consider bioengineering a scientific discipline so I had to beg one of my other professor for another letter. Right after I sent in the letter they sent me a rejection email. This was the only school that did not bother to even send a formal letter with a stamp but they were the first to cash my check.

It's not cool, but I've had other schools send me rejection e-mails instead of letters too. In the end it doesn't matter because you're still toast.

1. get a new nick, dds2011.
2. you should look at the big picture, you should consider your self lucky to not get in at unlv. i have been going to the unlv sdm for a few years now and believe me when i say this, they suck balls. the class of 2006 has been literally taking for a ride, most are at most c- students but because it is the inaugural class the dean MF farillo had an unofficial policy that they all should have a grades. the class did do well on the boards only because they were coatched for a good two months before the boards, something that is not heard of. the it department sucks. the student affairs is not student friendly. don't even get me started on the financial aid office. looking at hindsight, i would not have gone to unlv if i could do it again.

get your stuff ready for 2011 and think about more student oriented schools like boston or uop.

Thank you sooooo much for the insight! It's great to hear from someone who is there now. I greatly appreciate your honesty.

your welcome, let me just tell you the gold rule for dental school. it will be one of your most discouraging 4 years of your life. you will have to deal with finding enough money to finding enough food to live (oh yes, that will happen as well). keep your head high and stay the hell away from UNLV or any other school who is like this (meaning full of bull crap).

Don't you think that most dental schools are full of crap, or do we seriously have it worse here? I rarely have talked to a dentist that looked back at dental school with any kind of happy thoughts, most just nightmares

I have to absolutely disagree with this poster. I am a 4th year at UNLV and have been very pleased with my education. I have had excellent instructors and feel very well prepared to enter private practice right after dental school.

PM me if you want to talk more about this issue.

Every student I have talked to at UNLVSDM seems to feel like this. They all say its a great school with great faculty. They hardly have anything bad to say.

School is what you make out of it. Thats the real problem people face.

I do think that most professional schools are hell because of the heavy load, however, student here at UNLV have it far worse then others I believe. Having to deal with douches like Farillo, from Ericks King to Michael Mack. Not to mention the biggest Nazi out there, Haskin. Give me a break. The full time facutly is great but I remember very clearly the horrible part time instructors they have. Most didn't even show up for the lecture and some were as clueless as the students. Every school has it's bad share, I don't disagree with that all I am saying is that UNLV is not known for its student oriented policies.

jrd29, what on earth are you talking about? The class of 2006 got shafted the most, your class did not even have a proper clinc set up till you were almost done with your first year and even in your 2nd year, I would not call the "Boyd Law School" slash "temp School of Dentistry" a full clinic. It wasn't until we moved to Shadow lane that we had a real clinic. The majority of the faculty thinks your class is unprepared. the DS3 have had more clincal time then your class did. If you are happy with your 4 years spent at UNLV, good for you. I'm your junior and I am not happy with the management of the school to the "new" set of rules imposed by Haskin.

Agreed, school is what you make out of it. But UNLV sucks balls - period. My friend, why don't you tell me how you really fell about UNLV after your first year.

Dental school sucks ass no matter where you go. At least UNLV has some eye candies in the second year class lol. I heard this year's incoming class will have 35 females, so good for you guys. I'm outty to the east coast.

damn this is more school bashing than NYU...lol...kinda surprised to be honest...but in terms of unlv...they didnt accept my math lor as a letter so i sent in another one TWO times after getting another bio prof to write me another letter after i graduated for three months...n everyone knos how much that is a hastle is after u move bak home after graduation...unfortunately they never got it or so they tell me...anyways...they rejected me bc of my "incomplete file"..no hard feelings on my part tho bc UNLV wasn't one of the schools i was considering anyways although i always felt UNLV was a good school...but i guess now more people kno how it feels like when their school gets bashed on...haha...anyways...keep yo heads up UNLV students bc only haters talk trash...i would've loved to go to UNLV btw...

Hybridgen3, make up your mind you said you didn't really want to go to UNLV but you would go "just go incase you didn't get anywhere"

if you equate facts with trash talk, that is very insightful - not. all i am saying to everyon applying is to be mentally prepared for this type of crap. you would assume that after you pay enough for a 2nd mortgage you would get some degree of respect. i am bitter about my experiance here at UNLV, but there is no trash talk going on from me, it just my things how i had it.

786mine, I thought you are going to attend UNLV class 2010..so if the school has all of these bad things, why do you like to attend the school then?

786MINE,

I applaud you for your honest evaluations of UNLV. I think it is good give schools positive and NEGATIVE feedbacks (be there any) so future SNDers can make sound decisions on where to go (if they have the option of picking). Why the defensiveness, folks? Should only positive opinions be voiced and all negative ones be kept to ourselves? 🙄

I have absolutely no problems with people giving their honest feedback. I don't feel that I have been defensive at all. I am just saying that I am very happy with my education. I would like to speak to 786 and find out why he is bitter.

786 clearly doesn't like the school so I applaud him for being honest. I just honestly disagree.

You are right. We didn't have a "full clinic" until the end of our second year, which is perfect timing since that's when we started treating patients in the clinic. I don't understand your complaint on this one.

I think you are refering to the "pre-clinical" area. We had a very nice one at the end of our first year and all of our second year. It looked very similar to the one that you are using at Shadow Lane. Same equipment, just in a different building.

As for you not liking Haskins....all I have to say is if you follow proper protocol with infection control you will have zero problems. If you choose to cut corners then you will have problems with her.

Seems like funny logic. You are getting upset that the school is giving students more clinic time? Sounds like the school is trying to improve things. You should be grateful.

I am sure that there are students that are not prepared. I feel prepared. Come and find me and we can talk about how to be prepared.

I am sorry for your ill feelings. I hope things improve for you.

I never said that. I did click on one of the polls here to see how many students were entering for the class of 2010. I've been already going to the UNLVSDM for a few years now.

I am not getting upset that the school is giving more clinc time to the DS3, DS2 onwards. I think that the DS4 got screwd the most. At the end of the day, you will need your clincal experiance more then you will need your biochem.

I prefer to keep the online discussion only to the online forum.

Regarding being grateful, I am. I just don't like the fact how the school is run. Am I bitter about, yes. Do I think UNLV is a worthless school, no. Do I think it still needs a lot of improvements, yes. This school, like many others, says one thing and does another. The main aim of UNLV was so that we could give back to the community, but with almost 200k in loans and a mortage, maybe only 3 of the 75 will be working outside the LV/Reno area. If the school was upfront about things, it is one thing. But they keep changing the rules so much that it's fustrating.

If you don't have much pre-clincal experiance how do you expect to do well in the clinical side? Do you think that the DS3 are faster at procedures then the DS4s?

I never said that I didn't have a good pre-clinical experience. In fact I thought I had a very good pre-clinical experience. I was just refuting you when you were talking about our pre-clinic.

And NOOO. I definitely do not think that the DS3s are faster than the DS4s. We had the whole clinic to ourselves for one year. No upper or lower classman to worry about. If you had motivation, it was a good experience.

I did 20 crowns, 9 dentures, lots of restorative, plus more my third year. I wouldn't trade my clinical experience at all.

Hey 786 lip spike, why don't you quit wasting everybodies time and shut the heck up. You are a big fat liar. You aren't even in dental school and you are bitter because UNLV denied you. Stop bashing on UNLV and keep your lies to yourself. You claim to be a third year yet you were trying to get into dental school last year. Seriously get a life man. Loser!!!!!!

As another 4th year at UNLV I wanted to make a few comments. We were so lucky to be the first class. We got experiences that you will never get as a 3rd or 2nd(whatever you are). Our oral surgery experiences alone dwarf anything you will ever get. Jrd was right, that first year before we shared the clinic, there was no red tape, you just showed up and got cases you would never get anywhere else. My first months of 3rd year I was prepping bridges, doing endo with overdentures extracting fully impacted wizzies, alveolplasty's and everything else you can think of. Now a 3rd year cant touch an OS pt without a 4th year willing to supervise and most likely do the procedure. I would put my skills and speed up against any 3rd year. When I talk to other students at other schools I feel very proud of our curriculum. It saddens me to see you have had such a frustrated experience. Really if you hate it so much you should leave. That would show unlv's administrators.
Your education is what you make of it. I hope you dont take too much offense to this but it sounds like you want to blame someone (i.e. UNLV) else for your failures/trials. One more thing, dental school is supposed to be hard, not easy.

Wow, just becuase I have a difference of opinion, you are calling me a loser and a fraud? What is this, everyone gang up one someone who disagrees that UNLV is not the most student oriented, worlds best dental school out there? You don't know me, so why don't you kindly STFU, thanks. I don't know what you guys are talking about, just because you are the inagural class you don't wnat to admit there is anything wrong with the school? Are we turning this into a pissing contest? People asked about UNLV, I shared my opinion, there is really no need to make it personal and start with the "i feel bad for you, I feel sad for you, why don't you leave" crap. UNLV sucks, but I have already invested my time and money in it and I can't just get up and transfer to a different school.

My education is what I make out of it, that is correct. UNLV is fine, but there is too much red tape and still the school is changing on an every semester basis. And when you say the dental school is supposed to be hard, it is meant acedemically wise not due to people's ego.

Why is it that last year you were asking if a 17 on the DAT was good enough to get in. Now you are talking like you are this experienced third year. What is wrong with you? You even sent me PMs last year asking about letters of recs and admissions. Kind of fishy there lip spikey 786. What do you have to say for yourself?
