so the 4th year students have been in town briefly after finishing up interviews. the class gunner (nice guy, to be sure) recieved 7/8 interviews for neurosurgery - most in BOSTON. step 1 in the 230's, and has visa issues (he's a cannuck).

yes i am aware of all the myriad of ways that an applicant can be evaluated other than step 1

anyway,

so this "SDN effect" appears to be true . . . everything gets rounded up on here to the point where 250's seem commonplace.

maybe i'm alone on this one, but it does appear that hanging out on SDN too long affects my interpretation of scores and levels of competitiveness. supposedly 230 is the unofficial cutoff for competitive residencies, not 486,000 like it seems on here sometimes.

but that also makes me rethink the ease of breaking 230 . . . maybe its not as easy as i had thought . . .

whatever. just bored, trying to avoid nephrology . . .

Scroll down to selection criteria. Yeah, its only one example. I would imagine (now that I am going through the process) that if you have >230 and have a lot of other things going for you (ie. AOA, first author pub in your field, etc), you will be a strong candidate. You could argue that having a higher score (ie >240) makes the screening process that much easier to traverse.

wow, thats as candid an explanation of selection criteria i've ever seen. i guess its good to belt it right out to make everyone's lives easier.

i agree with what you say.
