What term does MCAT use to describe:
1. Spatial arrangement of all bonds AND lone pairs around a specific atom?
2. Spatial arrangment of ONLY bond/atoms/functional groups around specific atom?

Thanks for clarification!

Did you mean like "Geometric Family" vs. "Geometric Shape"?

For water:

Geometric Domain / Family: Tetrahedral
Geometric Shape: Bent

OR....

Stereochemistry?

I'm talking the former. Bent, tetrahedral, etc. MCAT doesn't use domain/family designation. The lack of consistent vocabulary is what I'm getting at 🙂

Hmm. The only other thing I could think of is instead of asking for "Geometric Shape" they could ask what is the "Molecular Geometry" instead. This is different from the Geometric Family / Domain.

Molecular geometry and electronic geometry? one takes into consideration lone pairs while the other doesn't?
