I posted this thread so that we can share ideas for extra curricular activities.
Let us know what you did for extra curricular activities?

Some others:

Volunteer for a local charity organization (United Way, Food Bank, Old Folks Home, Dental Trip like superfinger45, etc.) You could even organize your own charity event like collecting food cans or xmas toys, etc.

School Clubs: ASB, sports, chess, ecology, business, dance, knife throwing

Research: do anything

Thanks for sharing your activities, I am planing to start a pre-dental club at wright state university, the sad part is that we have pre-vet, pre-med and someother clubs put no pre-dent :-(

I should start doing a research too.

research, started a pre-dent club, president of biology honor society, organic chem TA for 2 years and 2 years of research.

1. Worked as certified dental assistant for 1 year.
2. 4 research positions as undergrad, 2 papers published as first author.
3. Published case study for consulting company that was implementing a paperless Hospital Management Information System in Japan.
4. Elderly care Volunteer for 3 years.
5. Manager/bassist of a band.
6. Make-up artist.
7. Cisco Networking certified technician.
8. Girl Scout for 13 years.
9. Pottery, embroidery/bag making, baking up a storm.
10. Student center event manager (this led to many guitar hero contests)
11. VIDEOGAMES! (although I left this out of my app 🙄 )

As you can see my EC's were a bit on the weird side....

Haha, that my friend is something to be proud of 😀

Honestly though, I got such crap scores on my DAT's, if it wasn't for my EC's I probably wouldn't have gotten in anywhwhere. I'm living proof that DAT's aren't everything....

The funny thing is once you are in and you look back at what people do to try to get into dental school, it looks like people are trying to overachieve.
People are running around trying to pad their credentials.

Video games was the corner piece of my application.

Haha yeah I hear ya... The funny thing is the only stuff I actually did for the intention of getting in to dental school was the research, because the assisting job is how I decided I wanted to be a dentist. Everything else I just shoved on my application hoping they wouldn't think I was some weirdo...

I hate world of warcraft 👎

I stay away from a lot of video/PC games because they've become very addictive. If you are going to get addicted get addicted to a woman/man not to a video/pc game.

I stay away from mostly the PC games though. I lost a good year of my life to Diablo 2...

I already am addicted to a woman 👍.

😀TO BOTH😉
We also play video games along with our other games😛

Co-founder and the first president of the American Red Cross Club at my school.

I'm glad someone posted this thread because this is one area that my application is really lacking.

Just wondering - any of you involved in political groups, like College Democrats or College Republicans, etc. Would it be bad to indicate your political affiliation to dental schools in case adcoms may personally disagree with your implied opinions?

Not at all. As long as you don't dwell on controversial issues like gun ownership or abortion then it should be fine. It's about the fact that you are politically active not the stances that you take on the issues.

Yup. What he said. You might also want to leave out your position on marijuana legalization or gay marriage as well

It''s mostly important to do things you actually care about. That way you have something worthwhile to talk about when they ask about it at your interview. My list:

1. Association for Women in Science- held leadership positions for 3 of the 4 years.

2. Relay for Life four years- Accounting chair one year

3. Biology honors society

4. Alpha Lambda Delta Honors Society

5. Mortar Board

6. Research

7. Internship at Medical Research center doing research in genetics

8. Orthodontic assistant/ front office manager

9. Shadowing at a variety of dental offices

10. Volunteering at an inner-city after-school program and food pantry

11. Flute choir

12. First-year mentoring

13. Innkeeping (allowed visiting students to stay in my room)

Getting involved I think was one of the most fun things about college. Don't just do it for dental school! 🙂

Yay recorder! Thanks for the kind words!

😛 I actually still have mine from grade school in my dresser. When ever I get the urge to play jingle bells or hot cross buns I whip that bad boy out.

OK, now I am starting to think it's inappropiate to put that on my app. Maybe that hurt my chances. 🙁

Haha no I didn't mean it like that. Honestly I think the recorder is fun. In my school we were forced to choose a different instrument once we hit 6th grade so my recorder hit the drawer.

Same here. I went from recorder - harmonica - piano as I grew up in Taiwan. Instrument is mandatory!

Yeah I went from recorder to violin to bass guitar. The recorder and violin was mandatory up until high school but the bass I did for fun. Yay multiple instruments!

The harmonica is bad a$$ by the way.

Violin sounds awesome. I would trade my recorder + harmonica skill for that. Seiously.

Yeah it's pretty cool, but honestly it's one of the hardest instruments to play and it's even harder to make it sound good. It's never to late to pick it up though 😛

My school didn't have a predent association, they had prevet and premed only. I didn't bother. I was the treasurer and secretary of one academic group, did numerous peer-tutoring programs, helped in a mentor program for America Reads, was a council member for student government, researched in an NIH lab for one summer, did a hell of a lot of community service like no one else did.

Basically, do whatever you want to do and have fun with it. 👍 Social activities boost your networks like whoa.

I don't think it's going to be a problem if a predent was active in a premed association if there is no predent association. I think it might be harder to justify having a separate predent association in a lot of schools since predents are so few in a lot of schools. The premed association may act as a umbrella association including predents.

The more I think about it, you might have lets say, 10-20 ECA for your application, and by all means if you do, put them on your AADSAS.

Keep the following in mind though:

1) ADCOM see thru your bull**** ECA, so don't write something on there that has a terrible description. In addition, if you do put something on there, be prepared to answer questions and explain it in the context of an interview. Make sure the details you provide here are the same in your AADSAS or you will be caught in a lie. :scared:

2) In the course of an interview questions about your ECA are bound to come up, either directly or indirectly. You'll likely only be able to talk about 1-2 of the things you've done, so prepare carefully about which you are willing to discuss, and make sure that they place you in a positive light. 😍

I agree. It's better to be involved deeply in 2 or 3 activities than a long laundry list of activities that you sort of did.👍

I just read a story of a couple that is divorcing because the man is addicted to World of Warcraft. His wife gave the game as a present. 😀 Now I don't want any copy cat divorces from our married colleages. 👎
