How do they compare? Are the questions similar?
People train with Uworld for shelves, people train with Uworld for step. The questions are almost identical. The format it the same. Confused if i mean between Uworld and shelves, Uworld and step, or shelves and step? Yeah. Because they are all alike.
Scores on shelves usually fail to adequately reflect performance on step. There are too many variables. For example, if you are working in the hospital 12 hours a day, 6 days a week on a medicine inpatient rotation and you have 2 days to study for the shelf, probably not going to be as prepared as if you studied for a full month for Step. Alternatively, you have to know vastly more details on Step (simply from the number of specialties evaluated) versus any one Shelf. Finally, certain shelves you may perform better on (90 on the Surgery, 68 on OB), so no one shelf can adequately prepare you for how you will do on Step.
A caveat. On my own score report, i was off the chart on Surgery and only average for OB/GYN. So maybe, and Im saying maybe, there is a good predictor of where you'll end up. The sum average, however, is based on performance of other students taking the exam.
