Yet another lab sells out. 2018 could be end of days if PAMA isn't stopped or fixed. We had a meeting about it here at work last week. Going to be a bloodbath.

North Jersey lab will lay off 538 after acquisition

It is unfortunate for those who were laid off. But, when Quest comes knocking at the door with a fat paycheck, the owners probably didn't lose sleep over it. So, the commodification of lab services continues. But the expansion isn't just metro areas. A former colleague of mine who does solo pathology in a very rural area has started to get solicitations in the mail from some company (can't remember the name) asking if he's interested in selling out his practice. The environment is changing even in the remote areas where pathologists once felt insulated as the tentacles of the mega-labs and health care networks continue to wrap around whatever they can...

The next business model for all the big labs is entry into hospital practices. Consolidating regional hospital based practices. Outpatient services are saturated already.

The big labs are making inroads into hospital practices. Hard to blame the hospitals for selling, the lab is rapidly becoming a cost center.

No one is safe. The days of the "rural" pathologist are coming to an end as well.
