  1. Pre-Optometry
hey guys so up till now i have been pre-optometry but some people have raised some very serious points about it that i am starting to get turned off by it, so im shopping around other health professions. As of now i know nothing of podiatry other than it deals with feet, but i figure i will shadow my fathers friend to see what the profession is all about and whether i actually like it or not. I was just wondering if you guys can help me out with a few questions, i have close to a 3.8 gpa overall, science gpa being around 3.5-3.6, am i competetive for the podiatry school located in new york? what are the pre-reqs, so far i have completed bio, chem and organic and i am taking physics next semester. How much does school cost? how long is it? does a podiatrist do surgery primarily or are they primarily a primary foot care provider? I honestly dont know that much i really recently realized that i should have done this long before i just decided to do optometry and im kinda late to the game. Currently going into my junior year. Thanks for the help any information is much appreciated.

Your GPA is competitive for every school in the country. Just get a solid MCAT score and you will get scholarships. Check the link provided in the earlier post for more info. School is 4 years plus a 3 year surgical residency. Podiatrists are the primary foot care providers and can further specialize as desired....i.e. surgery, sports med, pediatric, wound care...etc. Do a lot of research on websites and the Podiatry School websites to get more information. I also got interested in the field of Podiatry my junior year of college.

wow thats a long time, is it possible to not do surgery? also how many podiatrists end up opening their own practices? is this a reasonable goal or is it too difficult these days? what in your opinions would be the breakdown of those doing surgery vs those being primary foot care providers? would you say that most of the graduates are happy ? these are questions you wouldnt be able to find on a website but is more of a feel for the post grad market.
Thanks DR.Mushroom for the link i will be reading that website thoroughly over the next few days.
