I worked at Starbucks 30 hours a week during my freshman year of college. I want to add this as a work experience on AMCAS, but only to show that I was working at the time (freshman grades weren't too hot).

I feel a little silly putting down "Starbucks Barista" on AMCAS . . .

Any thoughts? Thanks 😀

Write it down! It does place your freshman performance in perspective and it shows that you know what it is to work on your feet, to deal with customers and co-workers and to work as part of a team. Some admissions committee members worked in retail/service as college students and they appreciate the "character building" nature of the work.

Great! Thanks so much for your reply 😀

I also want to know whether I should put my lab assistant job on AMCAS.

My work as a lab assistant is to be animal husbandry, and all I do is feed the animals and clean the cage. It's not research or anything. I have a separate research experience where I get to publish my work.

The reason I kinda reluctant to put it is because I don't want them to have an impression that I'm antisocial who just do bench work all day. But at the same time, I want them to know that I can juggle work+research+volunteer while maintaining good grades.

I would put it. Embellish it in a way that it makes you look good. Say something like the purpose of our lab was to find this and that, and I was able to contribute to it by doing this and that. I learned much about this and that, which would help me in my medical career this and that. During the interview, make it sound like what you did was really worthwhile and will help you throught the medical career. Play it this way, becuz everyone else does.

from what I've heard from people, this bs is all about the art of embellishing and eloquently elaborating

I've been told by multiple people (including pre-med advisors) only to list your duties/responsibilities for the work/activities section. I wouldn't go on and on about how this is helpful and educational and inspiring, etc., because they may pick up on your embellishment and be like "Okay, she's a liar."

Well, it is how you do it. The way I described it isn't that "embellishing" in the sense that I am trying to act like I did something incredible.

I put all my crap jobs in there - first off, shows that I was busy with something outside of school and ECs, and second, shows that I've got some experience being on the bottom of the food chain and being shat on by everyone. However, I grouped the really crappy jobs together to save space.

What did you title them? "Crappy jobs where I was shat on" ?

  Yeah, I agree . . . I listed all my crap jobs too now 🙂
