My input may not be as valuable as others as I am just currently in pursuit. I do however believe you should being an underdog makes your story fascinating and I believe people will listen.

Over and above EO-1 which basically means your parents do not have higher education, you are disadvantaged for the disjointed nature of your formative years (presuming you moved a lot and maybe attended many different grade schools). It will only help you to list your parents names, highest education completed, profession, living (y/n). This section isn't used for financial aid or anything like that but only to identify students who were at a disadvantage growing up compared with kids who had two highly educated parents and every advantage in their path to college. Checking the "disadvantage" box gives you the chance to provide a few sentences about your upbringing. That you had a parent in jail and a parent with addiction and that you were raised by family members (were you technically in foster care?) means you have had life experiences and a point of view that is unusual among medical students and that can be valuable in medical school and in medical practice.

Thank you for your reply. I was never in foster care, just went from family member to family member until I became legally emancipated at 16

Everyone loves the underdog story, if I were an ADCOM member I would love this.
