I talked to my pre-med advisor a few months ago and she said I should and I also commented on a thread a while back, but I am still on the fence whether I should or not. What it comes down to for me is that I was disadvantaged from 13-18, but for 13 years I wasn't.

A quick recap of my story: When I was 13, my mother and father divorced because he abusive toward my mother, my sister, and I. After we finished school in July, we moved to Indiana to live with my grandmother and grandfather. The school district I moved from in Michigan was one of the best and had multiple state and national Blue Ribbon awards. While I was successful in high school, the school did not have the resources and opportunities that I could have had. In October, my sister had a stroke. Because of the care that she required, my mother was not able to work and that put us below the federal poverty level. Throughout school I often could not afford school supplies and did not participate in many extracurricular because of the financial requirement. I also received free lunch. I worked my junior year of high school to help pay for the cell phone bill. When I was 14, we moved to our current home, but my grandmother moved in with us shortly after because my grandfather passed away. My mother wasn't able to get a job until my sophomore year of college when my sister got full-time state social workers to help her. That's the jist of it.

Should I save my story for secondaries or do you think it would be appropriate to apply as disadvantaged?

Thanks for taking the time to read this!

I'd say yes

Thanks for your input! The paragraph was mostly what I would include in the essay ending with something about how even though my circumstance were tough I still was able to be successful in school with the help my support system. Do you think that would suffice?

Yup. This is what the prompt is for.

I'd probably leave out the blue ribbon winning Michigan schools and just discuss the limited Indiana high school opportunities, sister's stroke, drop to poverty status and working to help bills - basically just the disadvantaged period.

Any thoughts about me? I never really thought about applying as disadvantaged mainly because I did not know it was an option. My "social" disadvantage came about when I was 16 years old. My father and 2 very close family friends died in a plane crash. My dad was my best friend and I was of course very sad and uncertain about the future especially about our economic situation as well as my mom did not have a job; however, we have done okay with money so it has not hurt too much there thus far (4 years later). Another tragedy occurred my sophomore year of college. The son of one of the close family friends went missing. He was a close friend of mine and I spend a weekend searching for him through the mountains. A week later they found he committed suicide in a river there and then the next week, my grandma passed away. Overall, just a lot of huge emotional bumps in the road, yet I have managed to stay focused and very determined, but I am not sure if this makes me "disadvantaged." Please let me know your thoughts and/or what to talk about from this. Thank you in advance!

This thread is for OP. Another thread would be best.
