Hey guys,

I have a little dilemma and I do not know what to do. I want to apply for a scribe position to gain more experience in a hospital before I enter medical school. However, 3 years ago (long story short), I received 2 misdemeanors. I am in the process of getting them expunged currently, but they will not be off my record for another 2-3 months. Should I still apply? Will they not take me if I have these on my record? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What kind of misdemeanor are we talking about? Most likely it wouldn't be a big issue, but waiting 2-3 months (if you're not applying till 2015) wouldn't be a big issue either.

Apply now, hear back from them in 3-4mo, prosper.

I was caught with less than 1 gram of marijuana both times. 🙁 I was young and dumb back then.

Have you already been accepted to med school? If so, I wouldn't worry about scribing for the next 6 months… Also, don't they usually look for people who can sign up for at least a year or two…?

I was deferred to my preferred med school. I am not sure how long they want people as scribes. Can someone here, who was or who is currently a medical scribe, tell me if they prefer people who want to work for at least a year or two? Thanks so much! I think I am going to apply soon anyway!

If you're already in med school just wait tables or do something where you'll make money

Yes, they do prefer that you do 1yr fulltime or 2yrs part time. The training itself may not take long (for us it was 6 lectures condensed into 2 marathon sessions, then 1mo of training shifts where you follow someone experienced), but it will take a few months before you are really up to snuff, depending on the person. If they had to replace you after only 6mo, the proportion of "time you were actually useful": "time you were employed" would be kinda low.

Less than 1 gram? How can you have a good time with that? The only thing dumb is the stigmatization and racism inherent in anti marijuana laws...

ANYWAYS

Definitely make sure you are ready for medical school before committing to this path. Scribing for 1-2 years (including during application season) is a great way to really be immersed in the hospital setting. I would highly recommend it, but probably wait till the charges clear 🙂

I wouldn't apply yet. If I were on the selection committee, I would reject you for that. In a hospital setting where there are tons of controlled substances, the last thing I would want is someone who already has convictions for drug offenses.

Yeah, but if he applies now he likely won't hear back for months...The background check comes after the interview. If the charges will be clear in a few months may as well apply now; it makes no difference at this stage and will speed things up.
