I e-mailed the schools I want to apply to (UCLA, NYU, UCSF, UNLV, and USC). I asked them if my application would be considered despite the fact I got a D in gen chem 2. My overall gpa is 3.32 and my science gpa is 3.2, I also feel I test very well and hope to kill on the DAT. USC emailed me back and said I would have to make up the course prior to applying. This means taking the course during the second summer session at my university, which runs from July 3 to mid-August. So my app can't go out till mid-august at least 🙁
If I apply that late, what chance do I have of getting in somewhere? Should I just wait till the next cycle and strengthen my app? I appreciate any advice you can give me.
Or is there a way for me to take the course during summer, then amend my aadsas application?

If I was you I would go ahead and apply as soon as possible and then update your application the moment you can have your new grades sent. This of course means that you will have to study for and take the DAT during the first half of the summer. If you do well on that and get a decently passing grade on your retake then I think that you stand a pretty good chance for acceptance. They won't throw your app. out just because you haven't completed all of the requirements as long as you let them know when you will finish retaking that class in your proposed plan section of the application. Hope that helps!

I just called ucsf admissions and asked them if my grade would pre-clude me from admissions. She said I should retake the course but she also said my overall gpa is too low and they wouldn't even look at the app. 🙁

I got told the same thing a few months ago and guess what..........they sent me my acceptance letter a couple of weeks ago. The addmissions process is really hard to predict, even by the adcoms!
Once again, if I were you I would go on ahead with the plan that I outlined (and fightingspirit endorsed 👍 ). I might also recommend to you that you do watch your back a little bit, apply at a few more places that you feel you stand a really good chance at. With the exception of NYU, your list seems like it could be a little risky considering the upward trend of applicants. That lady may have tried to discourage you but it is determination and persistance that will put you in a dental school next year. Make her eat her words when she sees how you killed the DAT :meanie:

Dude, adcoms are ball breakers for sure. I remember I called to check on my app status at Uop and they were telling me that I should think about retaking my DAT because I didn't have a 20 on my QR section. They want to try and set a high bar but in actuality they need to take other factors into consideration. If you murder your DAT which you can do, that is going to be your ticket. To murder that thing though, you need to put 8hr + days into studying for it. I did that for about two months and I was set. Get that Kaplan book and seriously memorize it cover to cover!! Good Luck, if you really want it bad you'll do it one way or another!!
