Hey all!

I'm a non-trad who gravitated toward medicine after a decline in my mother's health. When she passed, I got to work on myself, shadowed some physicians and never looked back. My 10+ year-old undergrad gpa was abysmal (2.35). In the 5 years since my mother's passing, I've added 61 hours of undergraduate classes at a 4.0 gpa (all upper level science- current ugpa w/ DIY postbacc: 2.89) and finished an SMP just shy of the coveted 3.7+ (3.69). I take the MCAT in a month, but my full length average sits at a 517 right now. Solid ECs but a DUI in 2007 (never in trouble since).

My SMP brekadown:

FALL Grades
Biochem (A-)
COT (A-)
Physio (B+)
Semester GPA: 3.59

SPRING Grades

Anatomy (A)
Biostatistics (A)
Biomed (A)
Path (A)
Physio (B+) - super fun, just challenging.
Semester GPA: 3.8

Total: 3.69

MCAT FL average: 517

I plan on applying to MD/DO, but wondered if my progress was even viable for an MD acceptance. Thanks!

What does the rest of your app look like? Any remarkable things?

I will let others chime in as well, but your app seems to be one that should be DO heavy; but depending on your final MCAT results, you could throw in some MD apps if they are in state, ones your mission aligns with, or any others with which you have ties.

What experiences, both clinical and non-clinical, do you have? We need a full run-down of this information.

We also need an actual MCAT score, rather than practice exams, as scores can vary. You should post in the WAMC forum in the WAMC format once you get your score back.

My experiences include:
3 years as a public health specialist before the SMP (6,000 hours)
Research with 4 posters, 2 grants and 1 pending publication (500 hours)
20 years of non clinical volunteering at a local community Christmas that provides gifts/meals for those in need around the holidays (400+ hours)
3 years of clinical volunteering in ED (300 hours)
Shadowing (100 hours)
School clubs: 1 where I initiated a program to present science modules to under-served primary schools
hobbies: SCUBA, musician

Will report back with actual MCAT. Thanks!
