  1. Medical Student
1. Demographics: African American
2. School: Michigan State University
3. cGPA & sGPA: 3.85 & 3.83(I expect both to improve over the year)
4. MCAT: N/a
5. Research/Presentations:
~100 hours in a microbiology lab
~300 hours of clinical research over the summer at UMich
6. Clinical experience:
Unfortunately this is one of my weak suits. I have no clinical volunteering yet but was recently accepted into a program at a local hospital where I can volunteer. By application time I expect ~50 hours
7. Nonclinical experience:
Volunteering at a local church in an undeserved community and tutor the local kids
Some volunteering over the summer as well at a food bank and with kids also
~22 hours total although by application time I expect this number to be over 100
8. Shadowing:
1.5 hours shadowing an ophthalmologist
4 hours urologist
4.5 hours urinary oncologist
5 hours pediatric endocrinologist
This should improve also as over the summer I was able to meet many
9. Leadership/Teaching:
Volunteer chair of one club
Possibly representative for college of natural science for general assembly
~300 hours as an academic coach/tutor
10. Hobbies/other: Member of MAPS club

Okay so with that said here is my dilemma. Currently my top choice in medical school is UMich. I did research for an MD over the summer, which will hopefully lead to a publication, and really just fell in love with the campus and hospital. They're my top choice and I recognize that they're a competitive school and only top students get in. With MSUCHM and the EAO program as an undergraduate you could apply during January of one's junior year and get early acceptance as long as you get a 500 on the MCAT. This program definitely would relieve the stress of applying to other schools however, the problem with the program is that this is a binding application. The basic criteria to get get into this program is to be either URM or from a financially disadvantaged background, of which I am both. Now MSUCHM is by no means a bad medical school at least for primary care, but as I want to go into ophthalmology I'm having internal debates of whether or not I should apply to this program. The UMich medical program appeals to me more and they're definitely a well respected program which I feel matters during residency. Also, over the summer I was able to meet with some individuals who are on the work closely with the medical school at UMich and have been remaining in contact. My fear is that I'll miss out on going to UMich if I'm accepted through EAO. However I also fear that I may miss out on going to either if I ignore the EAO opportunity. Also of note is I'm a first gen student in the honors college so I think that it should boost me up a bit. So, any advice?

I would want to see that MCAT before I would make a decision if I were you. As a URM with a 3.8 if you can get a good MCAT score you have a nice chance at schools that are better than MSUCHM inducing Wayne and Umich, tbh you will probably get into MSU as well.

Honestly if MSU is not your first choice don't do EAO, the free A is wonderful but you just need to take some time on that MCAT and could be looking at a lot of amazing schools choices with even a 510.

My advice? Gap year -> MCAT -> CLINICAL VOLUNTEERING! -> if MCAT = 506+ you can probably get into MSU-MD and other MI schools
-> If MCAT is less than 506 but above 500 you can do MSU EAO and enjoy that free A
