Hello there everyone.

I e-submitted last thursday and have so far designated the following schools:

Midwestern AZ
UoP
UCSF
UCLA
USC
Western
Temple
Columbia
BU
NYU

My DAT:

PAT: 21
AA: 21
TS: 23
RC: 20
Bio: 27
Gen chem: 22
O chem: 22
QR: 16

My gpa is a 3.3 and (don't hate me for this) I'm hispanic/latino URM (and yes, I'm 50% mexican, not 1/128). I'm also a California resident. If you need more info please ask, I just want to know if there are any other schools you think I should apply to - I respect this community's opinions greatly!

I think you'll be fine with that list as long as you have good extracurriculars. I applied to the 13 or so that is OOS friendly and accepted CA students.

Are you a CA resident? My ECs are around ~500 hours of dental/ortho shadowing, a few clubs, church volunteering, but not much dental volunteering. Plus I've worked 20 hours a week since my sophomore year. Even more now that I just got married haha

Also do you think I should even apply to more than 10??

Don't you have to be seventh day adventist to go there? I'm not...

It is a Seventh-Day Adventist school but you DON'T have to be SDA to go there.

Oh ok. Are there any other schools you think I should apply to? I was considering case western or nova - yay or nay?

lol....don't apply to Loma linda unless you are lds, you won't like it. You also need a LOR from your "spiritual leader"

Ya I wasnt going to apply there anyways, waste of money IMO. So should I apply to case or nova? UNLV?

are you a bio major? if so, apply to nova. if not, DONT apply to nova.

Yes bio major with conc in anatomy and physiology. Going into 5th year so I'm pretty much done except for a few minor GEs.

Would it even be worth it to apply to Nova? Their minimum GPA is 3.25, pretty close to my 3.3... too close?

Anyone else have opinions?? I could REALLY use some help with this... I don't want to have to apply next cycle!

Perhaps this will attract some attention...

You have a good list there for your location and stats. I would say that you included enough schools and you should be fine… just nail your interviews and you'll be in! Good Luck!

thanks bmr, that's reassuring! 10 schools is expensive enough

With a 21 AA and 3.3 GPA, I might apply to 3-4 more schools. I would air on the side of caution!

That picture is absolutely hilarious. If Oprah had ever released killer bees in her studio, I'm sure a few folks would still go ape****.

What other schools would you suggest? I applied to case too. so 3 more?

Seriously, don't bother with any more...your scores + URM = golden. Applying to more schools that you aren't really interested in going to will just be a waste of money. And then there'll just be all the interviews to pay for, which are going to get SUPER expensive.

thank you vigilante. you have put my mind at ease.

I pretty much cried I was laughing so hard the first time I saw this. It's completely ridiculous and I don't know who had the time to think of it but it works perfectly for the crowd's reactions

Does URM status really help with dental school admissions? I wouldn't rest your laurels on the fact that you're Mexican, as bada** as that is!

I honestly have no idea, hence my inquiry. I've always wanted to know exactly to what degree it gives you an advantage, but it seems like something no one ever wants to talk about on sdn and I've always been afraid to bring it up. Any OP who started a thread with 'URM" always got attacked for having an unfair advantage it seems. I'm not resting al my hopes on it though at all - but I would like to know if anyone can shed light on its importance.

I don't know, in this competitive atmosphere, I would apply to more than 8 schools. That's just me. You may or may not have an advantage. I don't think anyone knows about the URM question.

I'm hardly relying on URM status to get me in. It is, after all, something I cannot change. I was asking based more on stats (as in the preliminary screening of apps). I also applied to 11 schools not 8 👍
