There are 6 schools on my list that I'm not sure I should apply to because they favor in-state applicants:

U of Miami (accepts 16.5% non-residents)
U of Cincinnati (25%)
U of Maryland (18%)
New Jersey (16.5%)
U of Wisconsin (18%)
Rush (17%)

All the schools' GPA and MCAT averages are in my range. I have a 3.776 GPA, 31R MCAT, some EC's. I plan to retake the MCAT.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to which ones to apply to/not apply to? Why (i.e. b/c the location sucks, b/c their % is too low, etc)? Should I decide based on a cut-off %, like, any school that accepts less than 20% of non-residents, I should not apply to? How did you decide whether or not apply to schools that favor in-state applicants?

Thanks!

i don't know if % should be as important to you as the ones with the highest total # of seats given to OOS. because you're just competing for one of those seats, which doesn't necessarily mean the school with the highest %.

Most schools have higher requirements for the out of state students that they accept. So if you are "within range" for those schools, you're probably not going to get in. If you are "above range", then you have a shot. I'd get rid of UWisconsin for sure.

Those percentages aren't right... I have USNews latest acceptance rates for OOS for these 3...

Cincy 5.4%
UMDNJ-NJMS 3.2%
UMDNJ-RWJ 2.5%

I'm positive Wisconsin, Maryland, and Rush are also very low. You are probably better off replacing those 6 schools with 6 of the following schools(these stats are a few years old so are probably slightly less than the figures I'm quoting):

Drexel 14.4%
SLU 14.3%
EVMS 10.7%
NYMC 10.7%
AECOM 8.7%
MCW 8.2%
Loyola 8%
Creighton 7.6%
Rochester 7%
VCU 6.8%

Don't apply to RUSH unless you have strong ties to Illinois

Yeah UWisconsin -Madison is a b*tch to get into. It doesn't take very many oos applicatins. I think their median mcat is a point or two higher than you have and that's for instate applicants!
I personally know someone who had a 3.8 GPA from University of Illinois and had a 35 MCAT and got rejected. (They had good extracirriculars too).
But with those types of numbers I think this was more of an anomaly.
Retake the mcats and score a few points higher and you might have a shot.
Good luck

My advice is to call those individual schools and explain your situation and see whether they say it is a wise thing to do.

Someone else already pointed this out, but a lot of schools have higher standards of req. numbers for out of state vs. in state applicants.

For instance, at Umiami they req. 3.6 for OOS but 3.2 for IS applicants to receive a secondary.

Also please define what you mean by some ECs.

Umiami gives a huge importance to clinical contact and direct patient contact.

Honestly, I think all of those schools are a waste of app money for the OOS applicant...

On the same topic, what about Oregon Health & Science University School of Medicine? It seems like they take 30% OOS (I am a Cali resident).
