I have been stuck on this question for a few weeks. I just don't know if I should pay the application fee for UCSF. I have a 3.6 and a 23AA/24TS with a publication and several in the works. I have volunteering and shadowing and work experience as well. Also have letters from the chair of my department and dean of my college. The only issue that arises is that UCSF is super competitive due to it being in California. What do you guys think?

Your application is strong. Is the cost of $150 or so for applying worth wondering "what if" for weeks, months, or possibly years? Make your decision accordingly.

I don't see why not. If it's a school that you want to go to, you should apply.

It helps if youre a CA resident. I got an interview (didnt attend though) with a 22AA and a 3.69GPA.

I got an interview with a 22 and a lot of research. Great school I loved it there! You should apply

I honestly think UCSF looks for candidates with more than just GPA and DAT. I interviewed with a few friends with higher scores than yours that were later rejected or some never even got an interview. On the other hand, I had neither an exceptional GPA or DAT and was accepted somehow...

@kyle nguyen what were your stats if you don't mind me asking? And are you OOS?

I don't think you should worry about being OOS. At the interview the dean specifically said UCSF does not take OOS into account when selecting applicants. It just seems that way because there are plenty of more in-state applicants that actually apply to there school. So naturally the incoming class would have more in-state therefore the statistics make it seem like you have a better chance. Keep in mind that there incoming class average was around 3.5gpa and 21AA so we are all within that range.

2015 ADEA shows that 887 IS applicants applied and 65 got it while 944 OOS applied and 20 got in. There is probably IS bias here but (if Dental school in California is similar to Medical) it is a possibility that Cali applicants are on average more competitive.

Did you have great LORs and ECs? If so do you mind sharing what they were?

@kidsaremypassion are my stats fabulous? Lol. I have a strong DAT but I just hope my GPA won't hold me back anywhere. It's not as strong as the 3.8 and 3.9 students I see on here. Idk I just really would like everything else on my application to shine over it
