Hi everyone,

hope you guys are all doing well🙂
I am just wondering if I can get helpful advice from you guys.

So this is my situation.

I had an interview in early February at my top choice school. I have been waiting since then to hear back, but I haven't got any updates from the school, yet.

Luckly, I got an offer from my second choice school back in December, and April 1st is the due date for second deposit for this school. I already sent the first deposit of $1,500, and I need to send another $3,500 for the second deposit by this weekend. My dilemma is, I would lose total of $5,000 for the deposit if I am lucky enough to get an offer from my top choice school after sending the second deposit.

Well, $5,000 is pretty huge money to lose at least for me..
So I am wondering whether I should contact my first choice school to ask about my admission status before sending the deposit. But I am not so sure whether it is appropriate to contact the school for this kind of issue. I also don't want to get on their nerves, either.

What would you guys do if you are in my situation?
Should I contact? or should I just keep waiting?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

Just call and ask. They won't reject you for inquiring about your status. As for the other deposit, I'm sure you can get it waived. Call and ask to speak to someone in the school's finaid department. I had a car accident and didn't have money for one pricey school's initial deposit, so they waived it for me. Luckily they waived it, because my top-choice came through and I would've been out 1000$ if not.

I'm in the exact same boat as you (interviewed at top choice in February but was accepted to NYU in December). I decided to send in the second deposit last week. I figured there was a slim chance that I would hear back from my top choice before April 1st, so I didn't want to risk losing a seat in the class. I figure since NYU is the most expensive dental school, losing 5k in the grand scheme is fine, since any other school will be a little cheaper overall for me.

You have not heard from you "first choice" school because, up to now, they are not interested in you. You will be losing more than $5K if you drop your spot.

I didn't mean that I won't send my second deposit.
I just wondered whether or not contacting my first choice school is appropriate 😳

Oh well, it hurts me hearing that my first choice school is not interested in me.
But you may be right, and maybe I am dwelling on false hope.

Oh well, you are not the only one... I am dying to hear from my top choice school; I even flew there all the way from my hometown (Toronto) to my top choice school just to drop "I am willing to remain in alternate list" letter in order to express my passion for the school. Sadly though, no news yet T_T...

Maybe it is time to give up? I really don't know...

Anyways, good luck to you!

P.S. Is J Lim your initial? We share the same initial hahaha!

I'm in the exact same situation as you and I called my top choice today. They said I'm still under active review and they would be giving out more offers after April 1st, since people holding multiple spots would have to commit to one school. The admissions director was really sympathetic of my situation but I still need to pay the second deposit to hold on to my spot. I think its in your best bet to call the school but at this point the chance of getting an acceptance before April 1st is slim.

Yes it is my initial 🙂 And I live in Toronto, too!
Well, I am not even on the wailt-list. I simply haven't heard ANYTHING from them T T

Hopefully, we both hear GOOD news from the schools.
Cheers my friend!

Yeah.. I think I need to send the deposite.
Well, I know one dude just got offer yesterday; so I hope something good also happen to me soon (and of course, to you, as well🙂

are we all talking about getting into columbia?

but sending money to NYU anyway

Contact the school and let them know your situation, but definitely send in the deposit.

I just emailed the school as my cell phone does not allow me making an international call 😛 Hopefully, I can get some information regarding my status.

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions!

Let us know what happens!

I haven't received an interview invite from Harvard but haven't received a rejection either. I called last week and they said they were still "in the process", whatever that means, of accepting students, interviewing, etc.

I have very low hopes at this point for Harvard, but I hope that you get in nonetheless!

As for the really high deposit, I had trouble affording a $3000 deposit for one of my schools I got into in December. I asked them if I could break down the deposit into $1500 "segments" and they said it was fine. I ended up getting into my second choice, so it's a good thing that I didn't pay the entire thing! Perhaps you could talk with them about doing this.
