Hey guys,

It's winter break now and it's giving me sometime to rethink things.
I'm a sophomore right now and I did horrible my first semester at uconn. I'm just going to post the grades that will matter..


1st semester grades
Bio 1 - C +
Chem 1 - C +
Math 1 - D + ... retook 2nd semester
2nd semester grades
Chem 2 - D +
Chem 3 - B + (summer intercession)
Math 1 - B +
Math 2 - A - (summer intercession)
3rd semester grades
O. Chem - C +
Micro - C

* Not that these classes matter but all other classes such as soci, ling, foreign film I've gotten a B+ or higher

I just don't see a reason to apply this year..or even continue with pharmacy. It's something I've wanted since high school but I don't want to take my junior year to take more advanced classes and have it be wasted b/c it's not guaranteed that I'll get into pharm school. During the summer...I and everyone around told me that I shouldn't give up and that if you want something you can get it. I studied my ass off this semester and got Cs in the 2 major science classes.
I honestly thought I would've gotten higher than a C+ in Micro..but that was not the reality.

Anyway...is any school ever going to make a program where if you get a bachelors in something related to pharmacy..you'll get guaranteed a spot?

Will I even stand a chance if i ace all my classes I'll be taking during the spring? (chem 2 retake, o. chem, microecon, physics)

Any point in applying this year? (some choices are hawaii, florida, albany, mcphs)

Have you heard of the sophomore slump? My sophomore year was my worst in terms of grades. I don't see why applying would hurt you. Even if you don't get an invitation it doesn't hurt to get familar with the application process. If you don't have a lot of spare $ you might want to hold off another year. I think as long as you show continuous improvement in your courses it will show dedication. I finished with a 3.62 overall and a 3.58 in science after my sophomore slump. Keep your head up and study hard!

dont give up if this is truly what you want to do.
as long as you have an upward trend in your grades that is looked upon favorably

are you a bio major?
if so you can do good in upper division classes to show you can handle it.
just adjust your study habits and keep at it..

You know I was getting bad grades my freshman year and I told myself its ok i'll just repeat all my classes again and I'll surely get an A. thank goodness I ended up getting As on and outward without having to repeat so you can do it too. Ask yourself.....can I overcome the burden of having to repeat

and any other Cs and Ds you may get furthur into your academic career.

It would be too much to say you should give up but just be realistic about things - how hard are you willing to work? I just bombed first quarter chem so im planning some major changes in my study habits

I don't know if you guys have faculty advisors at UConn but if you do, I would make an appointment to meet with your advisor and go over your academic performance. Maybe they are aware of some resources you are not such as study tables, tutoring etc. As one other poster has stated, now is a good timed to look at your study habits and make changes based. I am a 35 year old who changed her major back in '93 because my counselor advised me to choose another major because of a bad sophmore year. Now here I am chasing a dream I should have pursued many years ago. Take some time and regroup. There is nothing wrong with you getting a bachelors in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, if you don't get accepted into pharmacy school the right away, but keep pressing forward towards your dream. I do suggest taking any C+ classes over especially in chemistry so that you are prepared once you go to pharmacy school. Your studies are only going to get tougher. So just continue to work hard, give it your all and then apply to pharmacy school. Please don't give up. Had I not listened to my counselor/advisor, I would have been a pharmacist by now.
